ResearchData Management: While working on project GORDA, we've been evaluating database replication protocols in realistic settings and workloads [SPS+05, CSS+05] and rethinking their interfaces to database servers [CCP+07]. The resulting insight has allowed us to introduce efficient protocols for consistent replication in clusters [CPO08] and wide-area networks [GSC+06]. These are implemented in the ESCADA Replication Server. Currently, in project Pastramy, we're working on a new breed of shared-storage database clusters [SP09b] and building the Holey CoW proof-of-concept. Group Communication: We've been addressing multiple aspects of scale in view synchronous protocols: stable high throughput with semantic reliability [PRO03], large number of participants with mutable consensus [PO04], and optimistic total order with statistical estimation in WANs [SPMO01]. We've also introduced jGCS, a common programming abstraction for multiple toolkits [CPR06]. More recently, in project P-SON, we focused on epidemic multicast protocols and in combining structured with random overlays for efficiency and reliability [CPOR07, LPR07a], having built the NeEM and Seeds prototypes. Currently, we're pushing the envelope in group communication by applying it to cloud computing management infrastructure in project DC2MS. Teaching
